Onpage SEO is basically optimizing your website for the search engines. If you have any sort of website that you are trying to rank in the search engines, you will need to be able to optimize your website for the search engines to rank high. Here are some of the basic things you should do when it comes to onpage SEO.
Keyword In the Domain – Try to have your keyword in your domain name. Exact match is even better.
Keyword In the Urls – Set up your urls for inner pages to include the keyword you are targeting for that specific article. Although you are trying to optimize your website for the search engines, keep in mind that humans will be reading your content as well.
Url Structure – Make your urls search engine friendly. Avoid using a bunch of numbers, generic pages, long urls, etc, Your url should be short, include your keyword (dont stuff it though), include words, and use hyphens to separate words if it is a page other than your main url.
Keyword In the Title – Make sure to include the keyword(s) you are targeting in your title.
Keyword In the H1 Tags – If you can, try to include the keyword(s) you are targeting in H1 tags as well.
Keyword In the Description – Put your keywords in the description too.
Keyword In Image Alt Tag – If you use images, try to mention your keyword in the image alt tag.
Bold or Italicize Your Keyword – Give your main keywords more emphasis by bolding or italicizing them.
Keyword Density – Try to sprinkle your main keyword(s) into your content once every 100 words. Make sure to include your keyword in the first 50-100 words of your articles and at the end of the article while including them in the middle of your article without overdoing it. A keyword density of 3-5% is pretty much standard. Although most SEO experts say this is pointless, I still do this and think it helps but I may be wrong.
Make Use of Meta Tags – Fill out your meta tag descriptions, titles, etc. It may not be important but it doesn’t hurt to provide this information.
Interlink Your Pages – Try to link to other relevant pages on your website within your website content.
Working Links – Make sure all of your links on your website work correctly.
Unique Content – Avoid using duplicate content. Make sure that your content is unique.
Website Structure – Make sure your website is organized and structured so that both humans and search engine spiders can navigate through your website. Make sure to create a sitemap as well.
Ok, so those are some of the basic things you can do to get your website optimized for the search engines. I will admit that I do not do all of these things and probably many others for various reasons but the more that you can do, the better.
